Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha — A Musical Reimagining combines all of the original source material with a new story and libretto by acclaimed playwright and broadcaster Leah-Simone Bowen along with Emmy-nominated co-librettist Cheryl A. Davis. Co-arranger/orchestrators are Grammy-winning composer Jessie Montgomery, and two-time Grammy nominee Jannina Norpoth. Soprano Neema Bickersteth, called “an incredible performer” by The Guardian, heads up an all-Black cast in the title role, with an all-Black orchestra playing both Western and African instruments, led by international award-winning African American conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson, and directed by renowned stage director Weyni Mengesha.

Of Thee We Sing: Art and New Patriotism

This For Freedoms Town Hall invites a group of artists from different disciplines including theater, dance, visual art, public art, and music to explore creative ways of engaging with civic identity, challenging traditional symbols, and rethinking what patriotism can look like in our modern world. Live performance excerpts from American Patriots provides attendees with an unflinching look at the lived reality of American Ideals today. Artists and cultural organizers Holly Bass, Helena Huang, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Miguel Luciano, and Samantha Williams will follow with a discussion on how the language and interpretations of patriotism can be rebranded, subverted, and redefined through artistic expressions.
